Amaranth is an ancient grain, originating from South America. Historically, the grain was a major food crop for the Aztecs, and was often used as an integral part of their religious ceremonies. Nowadays, Amaranth is consumed worldwide in a number of forms, including porridge, bread and even sweets. Amaranth itself is a broad-leafed, bushy plant that grows to about six feet tall. It produces a brightly coloured flower that can contain up to 60,000 seeds. Not a true grain, Amaranth is sometimes also called a ‘pseudocereal’, sharing this title with its relative, Quinoa. Both of these plants belong to a large family that also includes beets, chard, spinach and lots of weeds. Our Amaranth is sourced from Bolivia, where the efficient crop can thrive in harsh soils with little water. Amaranth is known to contain calcium, iron, magnesium and manganese, and is the only grain documented to contain Vitamin C. We recommend using up to 15g per day. Amaranth can be used to make cereal as well as added to soups and stews.
